Emission Lessons

5 Gas Analysis (E001) - 1 lesson
This emissions course will introduce the 5 gases and demonstrate how they’re utilized as diagnostic indicators for emissions failures and driveablity related problems.

Catalytic Converters (E003) - 1 lesson
This course will be introduce technicians to the operation of the catalytic converter and the different materials utilized in converter construction, causes of converter failure and test methods used to verify converter operation and efficiency.

Direct Fuel Injection (E009) - 1 lesson
This course will cover operation, diagnosis and repair aspects related to vehicles equipped with direct fuel injection systems. The course will also discuss the benefits of vehicles equipped with direct injection on the increase in fuel economy and the decrease in tailpipe emissions. Three combustion modes the system utilizes will also be highlighted.

Enhanced Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) Systems (E016) - 2 lessons
Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will understand the construction and function of the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system, involving the original charcoal canister purge control and its evolution to include the Natural Vacuum leak detection style system. These systems can detect leaks equivalent to a .020” diameter hole and prevent escaping fuel vapour while refuelling by the means of onboard refuelling vapour recovery (ORVR) systems. Participants will also be aware of diagnostic techniques to employ to test systems for leaks when confronted with DTC’s, and verify system integrity after fuel system repair/service.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Systems (E004) - 1 lesson
In this course participants will gain a working knowledge of the function of the EGR system, different types of EGR systems, system component operation and the necessary test procedures to diagnose EGR systems failures.

Inspection Maintenance (I M) Flag Diagnosis (E021) - 1 lesson
Since emission testing is mandatory in many jurisdictions, knowing how to do the various tests is vital to your business. This course is designed to explain the OBD II Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) emission testing process and how to perform it successfully. To further enhance this course, we will address diagnosis of the systems when monitors display “not ready” or “failed”.

Intake Air Control Systems (E008) - 1 lesson
In this course technicians will gain a working knowledge of different intake air systems used in vehicles today, component operation, the testing procedures used for system diagnostics along with how intake air system affect tail pipe emissions.

Interpreting Emission Test Failures (E020) - 1 lesson
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to interpret an "Emissions Failed Inspection Report" (FIR).

Misfire Diagnosis (E030) - 2 lessons
With the complexity of engine control systems on vehicles today, isolating the cause of a misfire is becoming increasingly difficult. This course will deal with components of the fuel, air induction and exhaust systems that can cause misfire conditions. Step by step diagnosis of the fuel, air intake and exhaust systems, using diagnostic codes and scan data along with a variety of testing procedures, will be covered to isolate the cause of a misfire.

Oxygen Sensors (E014) - 2 lessons
Upon successful completion of this lesson, participants will understand the function and operation of conventional upstream and downstream Exhaust Gas Oxygen (O2) Sensors used on gasoline electronic fuel injected vehicles. Participants will be aware of developments in sensor heater types/control system strategies and sensor circuitry. They will also be knowledgeable of diagnostic approaches to employ when faced with many drive ability concerns presented to repair facilities daily.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Systems (E005) - 1 lesson
In this course technicians will gain a working knowledge of how the PCV system controls emissions, system component operation and the use of PCV system test equipment to diagnose PCV system failures that affect tail pipe emissions

Secondary Air Management (AIR) Systems (E007) - 1 lesson
This course introduces technicians to the function and different types of AIR management systems, component operation and the tests used to diagnose AIR management system failures.
